Liberal Democrat campaigner Jed Marson and Cllr Mel Allcott are calling on DEFRA to urgently step up efforts to remove dead swans from the River Severn in Worcester to prevent further spread of avian flu and potential cross-species transmission.
Reports from local residents and passers-by confirm that a number of swans have sadly succumbed to bird flu along the river. Concern is growing as other birds and animals have been seen feeding on the carcasses, raising fears of further infections.
Jed Marson, Liberal Democrat Vice Chair of Campaigns in the Green LibDems and Worcestershire County Council candidate for Tenbury, said “This is an upsetting situation for Worcester’s wildlife, but it is also a public health concern. DEFRA must act now to ensure the swift collection of these carcasses before the virus spreads further. We need a rapid response to protect both wildlife and the community.”
Cllr Mel Allcott, Liberal Democrat councillor for Claines, added “Residents have been deeply distressed by the sight of dead and dying swans. Many people enjoy feeding and watching these birds, and there is a real risk that the virus could be passed on if it is not contained properly. DEFRA must take responsibility for removing the carcasses as a matter of urgency.”
Marson and Allcott are urging DEFRA to provide clear guidance on handling the outbreak and ensure the necessary resources are in place to prevent further harm. They are also calling on the Environment Agency and local authorities to assist in monitoring the situation and keeping the public informed.
