Young people are under-represented in parliaments and councils across the country and governments policies will often reflect that. On a national level this means pensions prioritised over student subsidies and home owners over renters. On a local level this can mean local youth services, mental health services and homeless shelters facing cuts. It’s so important that we have young people in governments, local and otherwise, so they can fight for our interests.
We are the youth and student wing of the Liberal Democrats. If you are under 26 or a student and join the Liberal Democrats you will automatically be welcomed into the Young Liberals.
We write our own policies, which means we sometimes disagree with the main party. Sometimes the older Liberals need us, to save them from getting stuck in their ways. Collectively we draw attention to newer ideas and the things which affect young people. Equal Marriage in the UK started life as a policy our predecessor organisation. More recently our members have had the party adopt a pro EU Associate Citizenship policy and fight to save Erasmus.
We usually host two conferences per year which function like the main party’s conference. There are a range of activities, many of them social. We also provide training sessions for things like public speaking and running for election. Most importantly, we create policy. Any of our members can submit a policy to be debated on and voted for at our conference.
At Federal Conference we host a range of events including panel discussions, training sessions, and social gatherings.
